“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live” Deuteronomy 30:19.
Our mind is the mental seat of decisions and choices. Choices are decided by the workings of the human mind. God has given humans the right and responsibility to make moral choices. It is part of His image and likeness in mankind! The Hebrew verb, “to choose” or “to decide”, is used mainly in reference to mankind’s choice.
Since creation, the human soul is in a state of “free-will”. This doesn’t in any way make man independent from God, but it does shows man more reasons to be dependent on God. Men have learnt to trust and depend on God because making choices in life is a sensitive aspect of living which can either make or mar. God by His Spirit and mercy has always help man to make right choices. He doesn’t do this by compulsion (He gave us mental faculties and free-will in the first place). God helps us in making right decisions that will enhance the quality of our live by putting before us choices.
“So choose life in order that you may live”. Though God tenders choices before us and expect us to use our mind, mental faculties and free-will to decide which, He also advices us on the right choice to make. His will is not ambiguous to mankind. God knows the end from the beginning, He knows what is best for us, though He gives us liberty to make decisions on our own, yet, He points to us the best for our lives. The decisions that flows through our heart shapes our lives (Proverbs4:23).
Life is about choices and the quality of our life is determined by the quality of our decisions. And if we intend to live life as God would have us live, we must learn how to conform our mind to God’s will. Since an ungodly mind cannot make a godly choice and yield to God’s will, we must therefore learn how to yield our mind to Godliness, conforming our mind by God’s Word to God’s Spirit thereby walking in His will. This is called the renewing of the mind. The human mind is given to lust and corruption (2Peter 1:4), hence, conformity back to God through renewing is necessary. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good , and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” Romans 12:2. Ephesians 4:23 also says “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind”.
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men” Phillipians 2:5-7. Our Lord Jesus while He was on earth never did any thing on his own accord, He let go of His own will and yielded totally to the will of the Father(Hebrews 10:5-7), He counted Himself of no reputation, He absolutely conform His mind to God’s will. Phillipians 2:5 now tells us to have our mind fashioned after Jesus’.
How far are you willing to let go of your free-will and lean on God to make life’s decisions? The Bible reveals to us that He knows us more than we could know ourselves. Let go of your mental prowess unto the God who knows you before you were formed. That is why the greatest commandment Jesus gave us is so important: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” Matthew 22:37. This is loving God with the totality of your human existence, engaging your being to His love.
Choosing life is a daily decision, therefore we need to choose wisely, because we are all living and dying with the choices we make. Our choices have consequences. We make choices, choices makes us. Our choices determine the quality of our lives on earth and for eternity. If you reject, disobey or ignore Gods principles you are the one who gets hurt and will have to suffer eternal consequences. God sets before people the opportunity to choose to love, obey, and hold closely to Him, which means life. Remember, life is God’s gift but our choice. We as human beings have been given this tremendous power that allows us to change any result that we do not agree with or like, just by making a choice to change. But a wise man will yield this power and privilege to God’s will. And blessed by God; His will is not ambiguous, It’s in Word.
Yield your soul/mind/heart to God’s will.
