“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot”. 1 Peter 1:18-19.
Ours is a bloodstained gospel. The Blood of the cross is the center of our beliefs! Not just any blood, but the Precious Blood of Jesus! The soul or life is in the blood, therefore the value of the blood corresponds to the value of the life that is in it. The life of a sheep, or goat, is of less value than the life of an ox, and so the blood of a sheep or a goat in an offering, is of less value than the blood of an ox. The life of man is more valuable than that of many sheep or oxen. And now who can tell the value or the power of the Blood of Jesus? In that blood, dwelt the soul of the Holy Son of God. The eternal life of the Godhead was carried in that blood (Acts 10: 28). The power of that blood in its divers effects is nothing less than the eternal power of God Himself. What a glorious thought for everyone who desires to experience the full power of the blood.
Our opening scripture reveals to us that the token of our redemption- the Blood of Jesus- is not an ordinary stuff, it is not a mere ransom offer, it is not a commonplace, it is not corruptible, it is precious. The Blood of Jesus is not just potent because it was meant to be, it is spotless, sinless, without blemish and without any iota of imperfection. It is precious to God, it is the Life of the Most Holy Son of God, it is the very essence of Christ’s Life, it is Precious!
There is a huge difference between saying that ‘Jesus died for you’ and ‘Jesus died for you by shedding His blood’! It was not just Jesus death, but the way He died for us, shedding His blood! Going on lets turn to Exodus 12, Look at verse 7; “And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it”. Look at verse 12 and 13; “For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: l am the LORD. And the blood shall be for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood I will pass over you….” Notice it didn’t say, ‘When I see a dead lamb I will pass over you’, It says; ‘when I see the blood, I will pass over you. How did they kill the lamb: Did they club it to death? Did they smother/suffocate it? Did they burn it to death? No! No! No! You see, killing it is not the answer by itself. Blood as a sacrificial lamb was necessary! So was killing Christ enough? No! Just like the Passover lamb of the old testament. He (Jesus) had to die by the shedding of His Blood! Here it is in black and white; “Much more then, being now justified by his blood…” Rom. 5:9. His Blood was the very essence of our justification.
But all the sacrifices and offerings in the old testament were only types, and shadows, till the Lord Jesus came. His Blood was the reality to which these types pointed. His Blood was in itself of infinite value, because it carried His life. So also, the atoning virtue of His blood was infinite, because of the manner in which it was shed. In holy obedience to the Father’s will, He subjected Himself to the penalty of the broken law, by pouring out His Blood (life/soul) unto death. By that death, not only was the penalty borne, but the law was satisfied, and the Father glorified. His blood atoned for sin, and thus made it powerless. It has a marvellous power for removing sin, and opening heaven for the sinner; whom it cleanses, and sanctifies, and makes meet for heaven. It is because of the Wonderful Person whose blood was shed and because of the wonderful way in which it was shed, fulfilling the law of God, while satisfying its just demands. It is the blood of Atonement, and hence has such efficacy to redeem; accomplishing everything unto salvation.
As we have earlier studied that before the advent of the new testament Jesus mediated, atonement of sin has been made by the blood of animals and all sorts of beasts, but in themselves, they could not totally cleanse man or redeemed him completely and this sacrifices must be made over and over at every instant of sin and for consecration. Consequently, when Jesus was to die, Blood was shed. There will be no need for His death if His Blood will not be shed, since, Heb. 9:22 says “…without shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins”. Here comes a Precious Blood; the blood of the only sinless man, who came into this world not according to the nature of man, defying all natural, human and physical laws and lived a perfect life not according to the law of sin and death. His Blood, unlike the blood of Abel and all men-alike speaks Holiness and purity- (Gen.4:10, Heb.12:24). Have you ever weighed how stainless His Blood was? Have you ever weighed how precious His Blood was to God? Have you ever weighed how invaluable His Blood was? It is Precious! There are at least 43 references to the blood of Christ in the New Testament, all testifying to its great prevalence, potency and preciousness.
When someone tells you that your faith is a bloody faith and the Bible is a bloody book, tell them yes it is AMEN! Christianity is a bloody reality; the gospel is a bloody gospel; the Bible is a bloody book; the plan of redemption is bloody. It is, AMEN! You take the blood of Jesus Christ out of Christianity then you have a book that is not worth the paper it is written on. You are not redeemed by silver or gold, but by the precious, potent and prevailing Blood of Jesus Christ. Without it not a sinner will ever be saved. Jesus has paid for your sins with His precious Blood. It is the precious blood of the Holy Son of God!
