SPIRIT FOOD (2)

“But he answered and said, it is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” Matthew 4:4.
In the first part of the series, we learnt that to ensure functionality in & through the body, our body must be fed and fed well, so also, to ensure functionality in & through our spirits, our spirit must also be fed and fed well. We also learnt that bread(physical food) can only feed our flesh (body) while it is the Word of God that can feed our spirits (Matthew 4:4) and that if we want to function in the Spirit realm and live life as God intends for us, we must be active and engaged in our spirit constantly by feeding on God’s Word.
If you want to grow as you should as a Christian and be more established in the things of the Spirit (growing in grace, faith, knowledge and virtues), feed on God’s Word. 1 Cor.2:12-14 tells us that spiritual things are spiritually discerned. It means to access realms beyond the physical and attain to the height of the Divine, our spirit must be actively engaged. To live and manifest Zoe(God’s kind of life), to be more acquainted with the workings of the Holy Spirit, the spirit must be alive, quickened and active.
If you know anything about humans, you know they require regular feeding! Whether as a babe or as a mature man, every breathing human require food. Babies are fed with milk while the adult can go for strong meat. This is well explained in 1Pet. 2:2 and Heb. 5:13-14 as it does applies to our spiritual lives since there are also babes and mature men in faith. “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby”, “For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil”. Milk is an essential part of a baby’s diet. Without milk they would suffer malnutrition which can culminate to death. When we are “born again” into the family of God we become babes in the faith. Without spiritual milk we would die(lose our salvation and backslide). This milk is the Word of God. As you begin to grow spiritually(in faith, knowledge and virtue), you will begin to drop milk hence, graduate to feeding on strong meat which is a more advance use of the Word of righteousness (Heb 5:14). So, whether you are new to the Christian faith or have been a Christian for a number of year(whether you feed on milk or strong meat), the progress of your spiritual growth depends on how much time you spend with the word of God – The Bible.
It’s not just a quick reading of the Word that you need. You must chew the Word to get the ‘milk’ out of it. So also, getting strong meat out of the word involves more than just reading it. This just means you need to meditate on God’s Word to get all that you should from it. You can’t just gulp it down quickly and expect to receive all its nutrition. It takes some time and effort to think and act on the Word and digest it, so that it becomes a part of us. The food we take into our physical bodies does not nourish us unless we properly digest and assimilate it into our cells. Spiritual food is the same. The Word you read has to ‘become flesh’ in you. It has to become part of you. As it nourishes you, it will change you by changing the way you see yourself and the way you see things. It is possible to study the Bible and not believe it, not personalize it, and not internalize it. This type of mental study does not feed your spirit.
Personalizing the Word and speaking it, helps us digest the Word so it becomes part of us. This, along with thinking and seeing in agreement with the Word, is Bible meditation. You are who God says you are. You have what God says you have. You can do what God says you can do. You need to say whatever God has said about you. This is the primary way you will be fed and grow spiritually. Never starve yourself of the Word, grow by the Word.
